Mezzanine Capacity Considerations

Planning principle: Treat theoretical capacity and usable operating capacity as different numbers.

A mezzanine changes more than area

Additional floor area can support shelving, picking or support functions, but it also affects structure, fire protection, egress, accessibility, material movement and operations below.

Do not assume the building can support it

Floor and structure capacity, foundations, columns, connections and seismic considerations require professional evaluation. This site does not provide structural design calculations.

Material flow may be the limiting factor

Stairs, lifts, conveyors or other transfer methods determine how product and people move between levels. Added square footage is less valuable if replenishment becomes a bottleneck.

Include permits and disruption

Early business cases should allow for professional design, approvals, fire-protection changes, installation and operating disruption. The cheapest quoted structure is not necessarily the cheapest finished capacity project.

Practical questions

Should I use one utilization percentage for every warehouse?

No. Inventory profile, storage system, seasonality, staging demand, handling equipment and workflow can make the same percentage perform very differently in two facilities.

Can this guide be used to approve a rack or building change?

No. It is a planning resource. Structural, fire, building, accessibility and workplace-safety requirements must be established for the actual facility by the appropriate qualified parties and authorities.
