A practical way to move from a vague “we are running out of space” problem to measurable capacity questions.
1. Define the capacity unit
Pallet positions, shelf locations, bin locations, square area, cube or another unit. Mixed warehouses often need more than one.
2. Separate gross from usable
Exclude support spaces and unavailable locations before presenting a capacity number.
3. Measure the peak
Look at simultaneous receiving, shipping, occupied storage and seasonal inventory—not only annual averages.
4. Diagnose stranded capacity
Empty locations may be the wrong size, zone or type for the inventory that needs space.
5. Add a growth case
Model at least a base and higher-growth scenario so a project is not obsolete immediately after completion.
6. Validate safety and compliance
Final layouts require facility-specific review of rack, equipment, fire, building, accessibility and workplace requirements.
