Direct access is the main strength
Selective rack typically provides direct access to many pallet locations, which can suit operations with numerous SKUs and frequent picking. The trade-off is that each rack face generally requires aisle access, so floor-space efficiency may be lower than some deeper storage systems.
Count locations from the real design
A planning count can multiply bays by storage levels and positions per level, but final capacity depends on engineered bay dimensions, beam levels, load characteristics, upright spacing and other design factors. Never infer structural capacity from a simple calculator.
Reserve flexibility has value
A location map that exactly fits today's inventory can become awkward as SKU quantities change. Some flexibility in beam heights, zoning and free positions can reduce frequent reconfiguration.
Protect the system
Rack condition affects both safety and available capacity. Impacts, deformation, missing components or overloaded locations should be handled under an inspection and maintenance process appropriate to the jurisdiction and rack system.
Practical questions
Should I use one utilization percentage for every warehouse?
No. Inventory profile, storage system, seasonality, staging demand, handling equipment and workflow can make the same percentage perform very differently in two facilities.
Can this guide be used to approve a rack or building change?
No. It is a planning resource. Structural, fire, building, accessibility and workplace-safety requirements must be established for the actual facility by the appropriate qualified parties and authorities.
