Warehouse Slotting and Capacity

Use slotting to improve access and reduce wasted locations without confusing inventory organization with structural capacity.

Slotting matches products to locations

Slotting is the practice of assigning inventory to locations based on size, velocity, handling characteristics and other operating needs. Better slotting can recover practical capacity when products are routinely stored in locations that are much larger than necessary.

Measure location fit

Track how often cartons, totes or pallets occupy locations with substantial unused space. In bin and shelf operations, location dimensions may matter as much as the number of locations.

Velocity affects travel

Fast movers are often placed where they reduce travel and handling, subject to safe handling and workflow requirements. This can improve throughput even if it does not change the building's nominal storage capacity.

Review after assortment changes

New products, discontinued items and seasonal shifts can make an old slotting plan inefficient. Periodic review is more useful than treating slotting as a one-time project.

Practical questions

Should I use one utilization percentage for every warehouse?

No. Inventory profile, storage system, seasonality, staging demand, handling equipment and workflow can make the same percentage perform very differently in two facilities.

Can this guide be used to approve a rack or building change?

No. It is a planning resource. Structural, fire, building, accessibility and workplace-safety requirements must be established for the actual facility by the appropriate qualified parties and authorities.
